Allrighty then,

Sometimes its our lesser-known acts which produce the more genuine night. Things sound fresher and its not as hectic as a big-time party. After last week's Coldplay blow-out, we're almost relieved to be featuring the excellent, undergound, Tuetonic stylings of TARWATER. Fall is one its way and the mellow, artful tunes of this berlin duo will certainly get us in the mood. A musical descendant of Cluster, Manuel Gottsching and Popul Vuh, they use bass, drums and phaseshifting programs to disperse the air. You could even call their sound autumnal. Free CD samplers [featuring the Liars, Tarwater, Schnieder TM, SFT and more] will be available for all courtesy of mute. Our DJs include Boston artists Matters & Dunaway and resident UFO. A nice night tonight at...

eavesdrop.

:: August 27th, 2002: TARWATER "Dwellers On The Threshold" [Kitty-Yo/Mute]
Along with Brazil, Ethiopia, Greece and our own, Germany is one of the most musically gifted countries on the planet. One big reason is the music expanse dubbed "Krautrock." From the tribal stylings of Can to the robotfunk of Kraftwerk, Krautrock has played a major role in influencing techno, hard rock, trance, ambient and hip-hop. All of which Deutschland still does pretty damn well, particularly well-produced and clean electronic music. The latest in a long lineage, TARWATER makes expansive, dub-enhanced art-pop that is both mellow and engaging. Like the Notwist, Morr Music and Blumfeld, Tarwater combines production skill with songwriting savvy. Boston-area duo Matters & Dunaway are going to share their inspirations and influences in a night of soothing head-nod fever. UFO has this glo-ing green tractor beam.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm: Matters & Dunaway [theillband.com]
:: 10:30 Featured Album: TARWATER "Dwellers On The Threshold" [Kitty-Yo/Mute] out: Sept. 3rd

:: September 3rd, 2002: ESG "Step Off" [Soul Jazz]
Most times, reunions are bloated, nostalgic and over-hyped affairs. Bands regroup, loathing each other all the way, mechanically pounding out hit after hit. ESG is decidedly different. For one, their music sounds fresh as tomorrow. They also seem to love each other, especially considering their sisters and two daughters. There is one similarity: the sisters of ESG want to get paid. After being overlooked and overrun with beat-biters, ESG will get its due. With its fans and Soul Jazz, we're pretty sure they will. People typically mention that ESG opened the Hacienda in Manchester and closed the Paradise Garage in NYC. People typically gasp in awe. Then it's mentioned that they played a show with the Clash and Grandmaster Flash. Their reunion is front-page style news story. Let's see if they get the press they deserve. Your DJs are Tim Haslett and Sandra Barrett. Tim writes about music for a living. And does it very well. WZBC's Sandra Barrett has worn her ESG records into a fine vinyl powder. Aural dynamite.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm: Tim Haslett [Most Boston-area Record Stores]
:: 10:30 Featured Album: ESG "Step Off" [Soul Jazz] out: September 10th
:: 11:30pm - 1am: Sandra Barrett [WZBC, Twisted Village]

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic
hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.
There's also a negative side.
