Local Media, River Gods Regulars, Music Fans and Friends,

When people think "downtempo" these days, images of car commercials, swank niteclubs and model parties come to mind. But the original downtempo sound was commited to the underground and anti-corporate grooving. Years later, the sound has been appropraited and imitated, but the originators remain. G-Stone is one of a handful of labels that have helped define downtempo music. A boutique label in every sense, the Vienna-based imprint was founded and maintained by the tres chic Kruder & Dorfmeister duo. It's staunchly-independent stance and attention to detail kept it atop the cosmopolitan heap with style. Tonight, we listen to their self-proclaimed secret weapon: an engineer named Stereotyp. His debut is "My Sound" and its blend of smooth production, stylish beats and top-shelf vocal talent sounds like it belongs in 2002. New dancehall for a new millennium.

++ Thanks to the indie distributor Studio Distribution, we'll have more free 2002 Studio Distribution sampler CDs for the first 50 people who stop by. Featuring Swayzak, Italian superteam Tutto Matto, Playgroup's sweet remake of Depeche Mode's "Behind The Wheel" and more. Local duo Matters and Dunaway join us again to drop some groovy trax, while the most excellent Kavalier, breaks from his longstanding Sunday night at River Gods to spin dub and R&B madness. The cutting-edge lounge sound tonight at

eavesdrop.

 :: October 15th, 2002: STEREOTYP "My Sound" [G-Stone/K7]
From Paris' Hotel Costes to Swiss chateaus to the Tribeca Grand, Stefan Moerth's sound rules them all. His studio in Vienna happens to be the headquarters of the G-Stoned sound. Kruder & Dorfmeister, along with about everyone else in the eurogroove elite has seriously chilled in there. Now the engineer drops his record, and its a broken-soul/dancehall/hip-hop manifesto. With vocal contributions from Tikiman [one of the best vocalists on the planet], Colee Royce, Cesar and more, Stereotyp bounds from the speakers with sensuality, passion and power. The ragga engineer strikes back. Matters and Dunaway, artists in their own right, man the decks early while the supersound of KAVALIER closes it out.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: Matters & Dunaway
:: 10:30 Featured Album: STEREOTYP "My Sound" [G-Stone/K7]
:: 11:30pm - 1am: :: KAVALIER

:: October 22nd, 2002: SIGUR ROS "()" [Fat-Cat/MCA]
At the moment, there is no country more musically advanced than Iceland. After Bjork, the fantastic Kitchen Motors label, Mum, and now Leaves, Iceland has rarely had an aural export that didn't get noticed. Sigur Ros is probably the most successful. Their spacious, concave sound fills a room and can completely change an atmosphere, especially when turned up. Like Bjork and others, the five men consider the actual terrain of Iceland to be the biggest influence. Barren, expansive and newly churned from the ocean, Iceland's igneous beauty is mirrored in Sigur Ros' work. Their follow-up "()" is what they call "Highly-anticipated." We'll listen accompanied by the expert sounds of WMBR's music director, Patrick Bryant and the oft-referenced Ms. Sullivan. All this and free stuff, too.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: Patrick Bryant [WMBR]
:: 10:30 Featured Album: SIGUR ROS "()" [Fat-Cat/MCA]
:: 11:30pm - 1am: :: Jen Sullivan

TO COME +++
