Local Media, River Gods Regulars, Music Fans and Friends,

It's fun to see an album blow up. Ágćtis Byrjun, the second album from Sigur Rós, got its start selling as a direct Icelandic import at stores like Other Music and London's Rough Trade early in 1999. A year later, it was picked up by the UK label Fat Cat. 2001 saw its release in the US from MCA records where it exceeded all sales expectations and won the inaugural US Shortlist Prize [judged by Beck, Aimee Mann, Macy Gray and others]. Fascinating how four teenagers from Iceland end up atop the hype. We preview their new album this week. Titled simply "()", it's further excursions into the dreamy, conjured world of Sigur Rós. Ambient, mellow but undeniably captivating.

Judging from the talk, you might want to come as early as you can. DJ Patrick Bryant plans a hypnotic set, and Jen Sullivan always brings fans. Plus, once the album begins, people may not leave. Ever. And break out those layered fall fashions. It will be a perfectly chilly night as Iceland again invades

eavesdrop.

:: October 22nd, 2002: SIGUR ROS "()" [Fat-Cat/MCA]
At the moment, there is no country more musically advanced than Iceland. After Bjork, the fantastic Kitchen Motors label, Mum, and now Leaves, Iceland has rarely had an aural export that didn't get noticed. Sigur Ros is probably the most successful. Their spacious, concave sound fills a room and can completely change an atmosphere, especially when turned up. Like Bjork and others, the five men consider the actual terrain of Iceland to be the biggest influence. Barren, expansive and newly churned from the ocean, Iceland's igneous beauty is mirrored in Sigur Ros' work. Their follow-up "()" is what they call "Highly-anticipated." We'll listen accompanied by the expert sounds of WMBR's music director, Patrick Bryant and the oft-referenced Ms. Sullivan. All this and free stuff, too.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: Patrick Bryant [WMBR]
:: 10:30 Featured Album: SIGUR ROS "()" [Fat-Cat/MCA]
:: 11:30pm - 1am: :: Jen Sullivan

:: October 29th, 2002: OUTHUD "S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D." [Kranky]
The funk patrol has an APB on Outhud. A genuine buzz band, these cats have gotten pretty far on a uberrare 7" and doing a split 10" with !!!. But this Sacramento five-piece deserve the attention. Molly, Phyllis, Tyler, Justin and Nic combine electronic precision with a punk sensibility for a dance-or-your-dead sound that smacks harder than a cheerleader's bubblegum. And with titles like "Dad, There's a Little Phrase Called Too Much Information" they're keeping their humor intact. Fun fun fun.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: t.b.a.
:: 10:30 Featured Album: OUTHUD "S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D." [Kranky]
