The British music scene has always been revered by American
audiences. Its dedication to career-minded acts and ingestion of pop music
trinkets sets a standard of consumption that the US would be wise to imitate.
The great pop tunes are separated from the professionals, and so critics, fans,
radio and labels can all enjoy new music properly, as both pop art and modern
art. Tonight, it's UK night as we play tracks from the new
Primal Scream and underground
sweethearts the
Coral. Both have been
available on import for a while, but now Columbia singed them for the US and
they'll be dramatically cheaper. They also have promotional budgets to splurge,
which will be in evidence tonight. And as usual, two like-minded and
well-intentioned DJs have been secured. Kerry Gaernter has a penchant for French
Pop, and Debbie [and her station
WERS] was
recently plastered all over the front cover of CMJ. Catch a buzz tonight
at
eavesdrop.

We originally talked to Columbia about having
a party for the new Primal Scream, but when we got wind they were also releasing
the Coral CD, we were honestly floored. The Coral, highly praised in the UK, is
one part Zappa, one part Beefheart and one part Sly Stone; really fascinating
stuff. Bizarre and artful, but fascinating. The VP of Columbia marketing must be
saying "Wha?" We'll help them out... Primal Scream continues to evolve from
their Stones-y psyche roots, but with guests like Kevin Shields [My Bloody
Valentine], co-producer Andrew Weatherall [Two Lone Swordsmen] and guest
vocalist Kate Moss [Model], you can hardly go wrong. It worked. Amazon.co.uk
calls it "Oddly fantastic" NME says "Consistanly
thrilling." We'll play a little of each record on their release date. Kerry
Gaertner kicks it off while superstar Debbie closes it out. Free gifts to
all.

:: December 3rd, 2002: 23 Skidoo "The
Gospel Comes To New Guinea" [Ronin]
The deep underground history of electronic music is
often ignored. Like other genres, it has many players who take many forms. 23
Skidoo was developed in 1979 by Kung-Fu fighting brothers with a love of
hip-hop. Their post-punk attitude and devotion to funk has been
perpetually plundered through samples [Future Sounds Of London,
the Chemical Brothers etc.]. They formed their own Ronin Records to
re-release these legendary records and now the most-plundered gets an official
CD after 20 years in vinyl lockdown. And like great trax, it holds up.
Everything old is new again with eavesdrop and UFO.

:: December 10th, 2002: VA "This Is Christmas" [Eskimo
Labs] Not exactly a bunch of rock bands covering hymns, but rather an original
record with various references to the holidays. Certainly, Sir, Alex MacGregor,
Soltero, Secrets, Helms etc. Oh yeah.
:: December 17th, 2002: Neptune "The Ballet Of Process"
[Mr.] Ask anyone who's seen them and they'll tell you: Neptune rocks.
Klanged-up, futureworld, artcore for the reckless.
