Media, Musicians, Listeners:

When you think of downtempo hip-hop, Jean Grae's voice might be the one that pops into your head. Like Bahamadia or Jill Scott, Jean has a strength behind her supple voice that not only keeps your head nodding, but also provides a seperate level of meaning to her rhymes. We're also happy to welcome Nick Follett back to River Gods, as well as the first appearance of writer Michael Endelmen on the decks. Beats, lyrics, rhymes and bass at what we call...

++ TONIGHT ++
 July 30th, 2002
:: With the untimely plug-pulling of Grand Royal, MC Jean Grae had the wind knocked from her. So she regrouped and cut a full record. Without lifting her shirt, JEAN GRAE a/k/a What What has finally been able to release her album courtesy of new west-coast indie Third Earth. A long-time favorite of the Herbaliser ["The Blend", "Mission Improbable"], Grae's slightly-lisped, staccato and melodic delivery is instanly recognizable and very, very good on your ears. Also, she is from Brooklyn. And in the case of the MC, that's the quivalent of Knighthood. DJ Nick Follett has the time. Michael Endelman, a longtime Boston writer and music fan, bids Boston adieu with a closing set sure to kill.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm: Nick Follett [Enormous Room]
:: 10:30 Featured Album: JEAN GRAE "Daybreaker" [Astralwerks] Street Date: 8/6
:: 11:30pm - 1am: Michael Endelman [writer, Boston Phoenix, Urb]

++ NEXT WEEK ++
August 6th, 2002
:: August 6th, 2002: DJ KICKS V/A: Playgroup Trevor Jackson, a/k/a Playgroup hotwires 70s/80s funk, sprays it with dub-style graffiti and turns it 180 degrees, headed right for you. Here, instead of recreating a genre, he creates a mood. U2, Run DMC, UNKLE and Massive Attack have all given him a remix. His episode of DJ KICKS, a quality creative DJ series, just smokes like an 8th-grade goth. So, in effect, we've got three DJs tonight. Pretty clever. MIT radio DJ Patrick Bryant likes new electronic music and the way it looks. UFO's slammin' sets have knocked us over twice. Call it TKO night. Find his last River Gods set here.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm: Patrick Bryant [WMBR]
:: 10:30 Featured Album: DJ KICKS V/A: Playgroup [Studio K7!] Street Date: 8/13
:: 11:30pm - 1am: UFO [Forced Exposure]
