By all accounts, ESG has influenced the seemingly-disparate sounds of punk rock, hip-hop and house music. On first listen, in becomes eminently clear why. And the recent rock echoes to the post-punk 80s have only increased their status and stature. Born from the Bronx, ESG has long been a group of legend. But having recently been resurrected with highly acclaimed shows at events like Ladyfest, and the must-have compilation A South Bronx Story, ESG is getting the recognition they deserve [they will make another appearance this month in support of NY/NJ's WFMU]. Over 20 years later, they are regrouping to release a follow-up, the hotly-titled "Step Off." Wow. Wow. Most times, reunions are bloated, nostalgic and over-hyped affairs. Bands regroup, loathing each other all the way, mechanically pounding out hit after hit. ESG is decidedly different. For one, their music sounds fresh as tomorrow. They also seem to love each other, especially considering it's comprised of three sisters and two daughters. There is one similarity: the sisters of ESG want to get paid. After being overlooked and overrun with beat-biters, ESG will get its due. With its growing new fans and the Soul Jazz label at their back, we're pretty sure they will. People typically mention that ESG opened the Hacienda in Manchester and closed the Paradise Garage in NYC. People typically gasp in awe. Then it's mentioned that they played a show with the Clash and Grandmaster Flash. Their reunion is front-page style news story. Let's see if they get the press they deserve. Your DJs are Tim Haslett and Sandra Barrett. Tim writes about music for a living. And does it very well. WZBC's Sandra Barrett has worn her ESG records into a fine vinyl powder. Aural dynamite.

As the genre they call "Electroclash" seems to have more legs on which to sprint, the melodic and sinister Ladytron leaps ahead of the pack with their second album. The dual vocals of Mira Aroyo and Helena Marnie parry off each other with a deadly sensuality, while tech-pop beats bubble and break like industrial-strength Bazooka. Chicago House megaman Felix da Housecat called 2000's "604" "...the best piece of electronic music since 'Enjoy The Silence.'" Expect many a single to get a devastating remix. It's party music for robots. It's fashion-forward bump tunage. It's... impossible to resist. A nice way to celebrate eavesdrop's 8-month anniversary.
