As 2002 winds down on the corporate release schedule, it's fitting that
River Gods' eavesdrop night ends the year in style. In fact, our beloved RG has
a stellar December line-up altogether [see below].
Tonight, we highlight one of the most essential reissues of the year in 23
Skidoo's The Gospel Comes To New Guinea. A band which melded live
instrumentation, a kicking sense of beat and a radical, conceptual overtone, 23
Skidoo stands as one of dance music's unheralded
progenors.
The Gospel... collects their most essential singles [A and B sides] after two
decades of
obscurity.
Their sound is a massive influence in dance and post-punk today, and the
reverence is well-earned. To illustrate, this disque is charting well at WZBC
and WMBR, Boston's most experimental and most rocking college stations
respectively. The MIT music director spins first while UFO from Forced Exposure,
sponsor of WZBC programming, shuts it down. Eavesdrop Parity. Make the Polical
personal tonight at
eavesdrop.

:: December 3rd, 2002: 23 Skidoo "The
Gospel Comes To New Guinea" [Ronin]
The deep underground history of electronic music is
often ignored. Like other genres, it has many players who take many forms. 23
Skidoo was developed in 1979 by Kung-Fu fighting brothers with a love of
hip-hop. Their post-punk attitude and devotion to funk has been
perpetually plundered through samples [Future Sounds Of London,
the Chemical Brothers etc.]. They formed their own Ronin Records to
re-release these legendary records and now the most-plundered gets an official
CD after 20 years in vinyl lockdown. And like great trax, it holds up.
Everything old is new again with eavesdrop and our residents Patrick
Bryant and UFO.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: Patrick Bryant [WMBR]
:: 10:30 :: Featured Album: 23 Skidoo "The

19 musicians and bands from the Boston area [and
beyond] come together to make a very special holiday record. If you think rock
musicians making xmas music is supposed to be trite, throwaway fare for a one
time laugh, you have yet to hear This Is Christmas. There are as many different
attitudes as there are bands on this comp -- a mix CD for the ages. New songs
from Certainly, Sir, Soltero, the Secrets, Helms, the Burning Paris, Alex
McGregor, Wolf Colonel, the Sea Navy, Alotia and many more. A great holiday
collection to put by your Muppets CD.
