Tonight we get a listen to the new album from the UK's
Libertines. A brash, insensitive album, it rocks from the start to the finish,
and does it pretty fast. Their love of the Clash and punk pioneers the
Buzzcocks is on their sleeve, but we all "stand on the shoulders of giants"
don't we? Good stuff.
Jennifer Sullivan, of the recently-revived Pill night (now at
JP's Milky Way), has stepped in to rock the party. While our first DJ, Arto, has
a band named Mishima USA and they've cut a few cuts tracks themselves. As war
looms, blitzkrieg bop this eve at...
eavesdrop.

:: March 11th, 2003 Libertines
Up The Bracket [
Rough Trade]
We're hopeful snarling, political, rusted punk rock will resume its
rightful place atop the parent-scaring set. The Libertines are the latest
attempt, from the legendary and independent UK-based label Rough Trade.
It's ugly and unconcerned, but stacked with enough hooks to charm the pants off
you. Joining us in this charming is David Virr, host of Boston's longest-running
rock radio programme and Arto from the Mishima USA band. Rough Trade spreads the
love, too.
:: 9pm
- 10:30pm :: Arto [Mishima
USA]
:: 11:30pm - 1am: :: Jen Sullivan [The
Pill]

:: March 18th, 2003 Rob Satyred Love [Chevauchee /
Source]
To be completely honest, we're taking a bit of a chance here. Bought
mail-order import for $22.99, we never expected Rob to be worth the money. But
hot damn if it is. Source France is responsible for Air, Daft Punk and Simian,
and its latest signing, Rob, is an amazing blend of hammond whirl, 80s pop
method and late 70s groove. If anyone in America has any sense, they will cobble
their money together and get the US rights, 'cause this could be a real
breakout. So far, no stateside artist has dipped into these highly-produced
sounds like Rob. It's just jaw-dropping. And we'll easily put any reputation we
have on this rekkid. Come down and hear something brand new.

:: March 25th, 2003 Soltero
Defrocked And Kicking The Habit [
Handsome]
Heroes of rock return home to a record release. They stayed overnight in a
sniper-panicked DC. Their white touring van didn't make things easier. The rock
band takes over River Gods.
Independent Detroit duo makes the most-anticipated follow-up of
2003. Also the title of the year. They are now purely punk rock. With
Cookies and Daddy Long from the Appliance Of Science.
:: Music Site of the Week :: Rough Trade If you took a poll of
heads and asked them "what is the best record store on the planet we call
earth?" Rough Trade would win. And probably hands-down, too.
River Gods is
located a small jaunt of the Central Square T. A completely unique, varied
environment where the staff actually likes what it does, the friendly confines
of 125 River St. is a real mellow and transporting place. And they
have fantastic food until 10. The DJ booth is always occupied after 9pm,
and there are DJs and events 7 nights a week.
And it's always free. The
run-down:
SUNDAYs the
incredible LUMEN ECLIPSE mixes
video live on the projector from 8pm-10pm. Then its the soul, R&B and
hip-hop stylings of STICKABUSH with KAVALIER
