Local Media, River Gods Regulars, Music Fans and Friends,

Electronic music has always been in a bit of a state inside the US. The density of Europe and the modernity of Asia lead to packed clubs of warehouse perportions. Also, the 12" single, so crucial to dance culture, never superceded the 45 in the colonies, where the full-length album now rules. In one way, the electroclash phenomenon, a multinational movement, is attempting to merge rock personality with dance-floor kick. Fischerspooner, a breed of Broadway vagabonds with a love of the beat, has inadvertantly provided the soundtrack. #1 was proclaimed by the Electro guru DJ Hell [3 years ago] to be "the greatest album of all time." Surely it's not, but it's pretty damn good all the same.

UFO rocks the party with fresh beats, and Kerry Gaertner keeps us awake. And we've got record-industry gift bags to hand out. Yee-haw. Trudge on down to

eavesdrop.

:: February 18th, 2003 Fischerspooner #1 [Capitol]
Whoa daddy. After three years floating around the underground, this album is still before its time. How often does that happen? Not very is the answer to that question. Self-released in NYC at the tail-end of 1999, its been rolling up more buzz than Jay-Z's Blackberry, and deservedly so. From the Gang Of Four cover to the burning bombshell single "Emerge", this album is solid. Its electronic rock opera sound is one-of-a-kind, and now Capitol puts it out in its homeland. We'll see what happens. DJ UFO drops his stash of electro records and Kerry lays down the modern sound. Delectable pin sets, CD samplers, stickers and posters to giveaway courtesy of Filter.

:: February, 25th, 2003 Francine 28 Plastic Blue Versions of Ending Without You [Q Division]
Already climbing the college charts, Francine has begun its national conquest. The music is pop sanctuary, lamenting but bright, surrounded by lush production. It comes from a collaborative effort from its four [now five] members, a dedicated producer and a keen engineer. Add the appropriately languid packaging and an organized record label, and things just start to happen. Recorded in Cambridge, Boston and someplace called Space 67, its a locally-produced product as well. So we're throwing them a free party. Band member Clayton Scoble DJs before, while producer John Dragonetti [a Volkswagon alum], packs his bad with music. Don't miss their debut at the ICA Theatre March 7th.

:: Music Site of the Week :: The All Music Guide: Along with the Onion, Google and Babelfish, this belongs on your central dropdown Favorites menu, not in a folder. The Ann Arbor-based guide is a testament to the power of the Internet. Millions of soundfiles, thousands of listings, and a latticework of links to get you from ELO to Shastakovich in three clicks. What would have we done without it.
