Local Media, River Gods Regulars, Music Fans and Friends,

Year two of eavesdrop kicks off this evening with a huge release. Chan Marshall, that ingenue par excellance, has prepared her 5th album for your pleasure. Cover art picked out, font-type selected and sequence carefully laid down. The result is You Are Free, and it will have critics scrambling for Roget's... they'll be flipping to "B" for "brilliant." It's been a full 5 years since 1998's Moon Pix, and while Marshall's original style hasn't changed, the depth of her emotive vocals and lyrical dexterity has leapt to the fore of modern music. We took some slack comparing her to Leonard Cohen, but time will tell.

Granted, we penned a review about it [here], and the record company is on our side, but you know eavesdrop, we don't buy the hype. Paula and Nicole take the DJ booth to make for a stand-out night, tonight at

eavesdrop.

:: February 11th, 2003 Cat Power You Are Free [Matador]
Charlen-Marie "Chan" Marshall is one of the most idiosyncratic musicians of our time. Her music and style has made a huge impact in the most independent pockets of the world, yet she herself is reclusive and reluctant. From humble beginnings around the South, Marshall's created three albums of poignant power and lyrical dexterity. Her talent falls somewhere between Leonard Cohen and Francoise Hardy, and her career has just begun. You Are Free is her fifth original album, and with guests Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl, its clear she demands the attention of her peers. A release that solidifies her as one of our finest. Paula makes her debut on the decks, Nicole has an eclectic set lined up, and we've got giveaways galore.

:: February 18th, 2003 Fischerspooner #1 [Capitol]
Whoa daddy. After three years floating around the underground, this album is still before its time. How often does that happen? Not very is the answer to that question. Self-released in NYC at the tail-end of 1999, its been rolling up more buzz than Jay-Z's Blackberry, and deservedly so. From the Gang Of Four cover to the burning bombshell single "Emerge", this album is solid. It's electronic rock opera sound is one-of-a-kind, and now Capitol puts it on the States. I can't wait to see what happens. DJ UFO drops his stash of electro records and Kerry lays down the modern sound. Delectable pin sets, stickers and posters to giveaway courtesy of Filter.
