Local Media, River Gods Regulars, Music Fans and Friends,

With the music business in retraction, the hope is the best independant labels will rise to the proverbial top. London's Barely Breaking Even Records, an underdog on cue, is one such label. Seeing the BBE imprint on a compilation or reissue meant the Selecktors took care and personal pride in putting out a disc. Their name, which we always seem to draw attention to, hints at how all labels, perhaps, should be run. We finally got around to viewing 24 Hour Party People [its ridiculous American DVD Cover notwithstanding] and were reminded why we even associate with the business. To promote greatness. DJ Spinna is just steps from greatness, with a lengthy string of top-shelf stuuuf, and tonight we're playing his record, Here To There, out next week. If you can track down his mix of Stevie Wonder covers ["Wonder Wrote It"], buy it immediately.

River Gods greats Kavalier and Dali have stepped up to, well, reprazent. Totally slammin. And don't forget next week Eavesdrop will celebrate 1 year with WERS and Easy on the decks. Massive Attack giveaways will be in effect. Download "Barely Breaking Even" by the Universal Robot Band and jam it on your way down to

eavesdrop.

:: January 28th, 2003 DJ Spinna Here To There: Beat Generation [BBE/Rapster]
In the "Beat Generation" CD series hip-hop producers are allowed to do whatever they want. The trick to its quality output is the talent so far in the series. Marley Marl, Jay Dee, Jazzy Jeff, Pete Rock and will.i.am have each been recruited by UK stalwart [and perfectly named] Barely Breaking Even records. BBE, for short. Add to this list the world-renowned and indie to the core sound of one DJ Spinna and you have another classic. Featuring Rise, Soulive, the Jigmastas and Vinija Mojica. Two of RG's own DJs take the decks with the same creative urge. Thursday's much-loved Dali, Spinna's aesthetic twin, and Sunday's long-standing bomp king Kavalier brings Stickabush to Tuesdays. When you nod your head, nod it up.

:: 10:30 :: Featured Album: DJ Spinna Here To There: Beat Generation [BBE/Rapster]

:: February 4th, 2003 Massive Attack 100th Window [Virgin]
Eavesdrop started a year ago with the Boards Of Canada, 2002's most anticipated record. 100th Window is 2003's. Five years gone, the Bristol Boys return. A trio that started off in the now legendary Wild Bunch sound system, they've housed Tricky, Portishead, composer Craig Armstrong, Tracey Thorn, Elizabeth Frazer, Madonna, Garbage, Mad Professor... well, it's likely they invented the "trip hop" genre. The uncut funk. Stealthy and stunning. Also our 1st Anniversary party. Plenty of giveaways courtesy of Virgin Records. With WERS' Revolutions program going pro and eavesdrop founder Easy playing late. Stay up a little later.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: Andrew [WERS]
:: 10:30 :: Featured Album: Massive Attack 100th Window [Virgin]
:: 11:30pm - 1am: :: Easy

TO COME +++
:: February 11th, 2003 Cat Power You Are Free [Matador]
A tremendous record. Definately album of the year type stuff. Paula Crossfield rocks the first and second turntables.
:: February 18th, 2003 Fischerspooner #1 [Capitol]
Long mired in International label infighting, Fischerspooner's ginormous #1 sees domestic release. With DJ UFO and Kerry Gaertner.
:: February, 25th, 2003 Francine 28 Plastic Blue Versions of Ending Without You [Q Division] Boston's own Radiohead. An astonishing record produced by our DJ, John Dragonetti.

:: Music Site of the Week :: Nova Planet: This is the last time we feature a French site. Honest. Radio Nova, the state-supported cultural battleship, has probably the best music programming on the planet [sorry, Radio One]. Pop, electro, soul, downtempo, hip-hop, house, mix it up. Speak French. Shake.

River Gods is located a small jaunt of the Central Square T. A completely unique, varied enviroment where the staff actually likes what it does, the friendly confines of 125 River St. is a real mellow and transporting place. And they have fantastic food until 10. The DJ booth is always occupied after 9pm, as there's DJs and events 7 nights a week.

And it's always free. The run-down:

SUNDAYs gots the soul, R&B and hip-hop stylings, STICKABUSH with KAVALIER
MONDAYs Boston's WEEKLY DIG arranges a DJ showdown every week for WEEKLY WAX
TUESDAYs eavesdrop continues to bring new music and like-minded DJs.
Cabin Stabbin WEDNESDAYs provide a midweek respite with a dose of DUB with DJ Boogie-da-doo
