Hearing the strands of the Sea And Cake is quite comforting.
For one, they remain the kind of act that is firmly underground. No videos, no
propensity to tour and the membes other duties keep them off the magazine covers
and onto your turntable. They're the kind of band that people rather not tell
everyone about because they want to keep them for themselves. A kind of
supergroup that people dote on, so much so that rumours of their break up always
spread rapidly over the end. Decidedly tonal but hummingly melodic, S&C
balance the timing of dance, the underplay of jazz and the fluidity of lounge
for a self-defined sound. Our DJs for the night include Chris Brokaw, who
appears on a number of Thrill Jockey recordings, and Tinobeat, once-member of
the Secrets and one of those doting fans. Warm music, warm interior, warm
hosts.
Also, River Gods was featured very favorably in the Globe on Saturday.
Thanks to them [read it
here]. I love
this sentence, though: "Many people seem to come to
River Gods for
the music, which varies from lounge chill to loud '80s... stick to slower
weeknights if you want to make conversation, and in general go early."
Come early, leave late we say at
eavesdrop.

:: January 14th, 2003: The Sea
And Cake "One Bedroom" [Thrill
Jockey]
There is such a devotion of these four from Chicago, it's past cult-like
status. And deservingly so. Ten years of sweet, beloved, jazz-enhanced pop will
do that for you. The Sea and Cake are: percussive mastermind and producer John
McEntire, broken-tenor vocalist Sam Prekop, Coctails talent and Sof' Boy
illustrator Archer Prewitt, and Shrimp Boat bassist Eric Claridge. A preciously
unique combo that many fans devote their ears to nightly. We're sure most of
them have heard this career-crowning jewel already, but it's official
release is still a week away. And the packaging and sequencing makes the
disque.

Scotland. This won't be the last time eavesdrop nominates it for most
gifted musical country on earth. At the epicenter of its soft pop revolution,
the Delgados have quietly flow the flag for eight years. Belle
And Sebastian, Mogwai, Bis, Arab Strap and many more have come into their sphere
of influence. Now teamed with Flaming Lips / Mercury Lips producer David
Fridmann they've laid down what many put atop their best of 2002. "Hate"
combines Emma Pollock's distinctive, delicious vocals, with the dense
musicianship of three childhood friends [Alun, Stewart and Paul] in a whorl of
empassioned pop music. David Virr from WMFO's British Accents [recently featured
in the Boston Globe] and WERS' Lil Debbie [recent cover star of CMJ Weekly] make
for one solid, solid nite.
:: 9pm - 10:30pm :: David Virr [WMFO]
:: 11:30pm - 1am: :: Lil Debbie [WERS]
:: January 28th, 2003 DJ Spinna
"Beat Generation" [Rapster]
Another classic from the Beat Generation series, a series made for DJ
Spinna. Featuring Rise, Soulive, the Jigmastas and Vinija Mojica.
:: February 4th, 2003 Massive
Attack "100th Window" [Virgin]
It's hard to overstated the
influence and output of this Bristol trio. Their long-awaited 4th Long
Player.
:: February 11th, 2003 Cat Power
"You Are Free" [Matador]
From its empowering title to the remarkable maturity within, Chan Marshall
has cut what might be the recording of her career.
:: February 18th, 2003 Fischerspooner "#1" [
Capitol]
Long mired in International label infighting, Fischerspooner's ginormous #1
sees domestic release.
:: February, 25th, 2003
Francine "28 Plastic
Blue Versions of Ending Without You" [
Q
Division] Boston's own Radiohead. An astonishing record produced by our DJ,
John Dragonetti.
:: Site of the Week :: Les Inrockuptibles: The best new music
magazine in Europe, Les Inrockuptibles covers Rock and Electronic well
enough. But add the French take on Rap/Soul and World, along with those
delightful French genres like Chanson their Musiqes Nouvelles, and its site is
endlessly fascinating. So it's in French, whaddaya want?
